However, as a kid, the “return” part of Return to Brookmere confused me. I assumed it meant this was a sequel, so for a few years I was in search of the original. Btookmere is some return to the practice in book 2 of going long stretches without choices being made available, but it’s not as bad here as in book 2.

Return to Brookmere (Endless Quest #4) by Rose Estes

Partly it’s stuff like a lots of the context being in relation to his father, b instructional tone that Mim takes with him, c fighting child monsters in many scenes, d cover art gives him childlike proportions. Thematically this one is similar to the first book, Dungeon of Dreadin that it is basically a solo dungeon crawl with lots of fighting.
